Learn about the legal organizations in Iowa working to fight wrongful convictions:
The Wrongful Conviction Unit (WCU) is the division of the State Public Defender's Office assigned to post-conviction relief matters. The Unit receives appointments directly from the court for pending post-conviction relief claims accepts applications from incarcerated individuals with claims of factual innocence.
The Unit has attorneys that handle any post-conviction relief application where the court has appointed them, and attorneys who work with innocence project organizations to investigate and litigate claims of actual innocence and/or seek post-conviction DNA testing.
The Wrongful Conviction Clinic provides 2L and 3L law student attorneys with the opportunity to investigate and contribute to work on post-conviction litigation for Iowa inmates claiming factual innocence.
The Wrongful Conviction Clinic was made possible by a unique collaboration between Drake Law School and the Iowa State Public Defender.
